Educator & Storyteller

Educator

Educating and empowering people is my form of activism.
Huong Truong standing on path with golden ghinko leaves fallen on the floor.

Howdy! I am Huong Truong,

and I care about educating.

I believe impactful education serves to challenge students and diversify their worldview as well as my own. I am motivated to build leaders who are agents in creating positive, impactful change on and off-campus. I also believe that educating is activism that generates social justice actions beyond the four walls of a building. Teaching and learning have always extended far past the classroom for me, which is why I choose to be a student affairs professional. I am currently a full-time Ph.D. student in the Higher Education, Student Affairs, and International Education Policy program at the University of Maryland, College Park. Alongside my studies, I serve as a resident director in the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life at UMD. Here’s a bit of what I have done and hope to do as an educator.

With purposeful changes, I believe sororities and fraternities may create positive, educational student development and community impact. I have experience in advising students in the Multicultural Greek Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Panhellenic Association, and the Interfraternity Council. This includes educational and social program coordination, council leadership advising, chapter coaching, facilitation, and curriculum building. Like many in the field, my love for student affairs developed from my involvement as an undergrad. I continue to foster this passion through my career and service with the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA), Southeastern Greek Leadership Association (SGLA), and Alpha Phi Gamma National Sorority, Inc., my own sisterhood.

Inclusion & EquitY

Mission_TRUONG.JPG

I strive to create inclusive, equitable learning environments and resources for students from marginalized communities. For me, this means uplifting the voices and stories of students, staff, and faculty from those communities, while providing the support they want and need. I champion creating intentional opportunities for growth and reflection to encourage identity development. By cultivating their abilities to challenge their own perspectives and build their sense of self-authorship, I empower my students to be life-long learners. Ultimately, I aspire to shape active citizens and impactful leaders in the world.
